The Number 46: The Temple, the Body, and the Years of Rebuilding

"This temple has been under construction for 46 years," they told Jesus. He was speaking of the temple of His body. The number 46 connects physical structure to divine indwelling.

Forty-Six Years

When Jesus said, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up," the Jews responded: "It has taken 46 years to build this temple, and You will raise it in three days?" (John 2:20). Herod's Temple renovation had been ongoing since approximately 19 BC, placing this conversation around 27 AD — 46 years of continuous construction.

But John adds the crucial footnote: "He was speaking about the temple of His body" (John 2:21). The 46 years of physical construction become a prophetic reference to the bodily temple — the incarnate God dwelling among humanity.

46 Chromosomes

The human body contains 46 chromosomes — 23 pairs that encode our complete genetic identity. The temple Jesus spoke of — His human body — was built on 46 chromosomes, just like every other human body. The number of the Temple and the number of the human genome are the same.

This is staggering theology encoded in biology: the God who took 46 years to build His earthly Temple chose to dwell in a body structured on 46 chromosomes. The physical and the spiritual converge at the number 46.

Adam and the Number 46

In Greek gematria, the name Adam (Αδαμ) equals 46: Α(1) + δ(4) + α(1) + μ(40) = 46. The first human — the prototype of the bodily temple — carries the number 46 in his very name. When Paul calls Jesus "the last Adam" (1 Corinthians 15:45), he is connecting the 46 of the first Adam's name to the 46 of the Temple and the 46 of human chromosomes.

Forty-Six Encampments

Israel made 42 encampments in the wilderness (Numbers 33), but some traditions count additional stations to reach 46 — the number of stops before entering the Promised Land. Each encampment was a temporary dwelling, a tent-temple in the desert, moving toward the permanent dwelling God had prepared.

The Body as Temple

Paul makes the connection explicit: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). The number 46 bridges the physical and spiritual dimensions of this truth. Your body — built on 46 chromosomes, named after Adam who equals 46, patterned after the Temple that took 46 years — is designed to house the presence of God.

If 46 speaks to you, it may be calling attention to the stewardship of your body-temple: what took years to build is not meant to be neglected. The construction has a purpose — divine indwelling.
